??? >> JIMMY LI IS A MAN WHOSE MONEY HAS GOTTEN HIM INTO A GREAT DEAL OF TROUBLE. HE IS SELF-MADE, ENORMOUSLY WEALTHY WHICH HAS THE GIVEN HIM A PLATFORM TO SAY THINGS THAT PUT HIM IN INCREDIBLE DANGER. >> CHINA IS DETERMINED TO TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM.

EWITH JUST HAVE TO FIGHT. WE CAN’T ALLOW THAT. >> THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY CALLS HIM A TRAITOR, A LAP DOG TO THE WEST. HIS SUPPORTERS SEE HIM AS A LIVING LEGEND, MAYBE THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON IN HONGENING CO, BUT HE’S NOW ON TRIAL, AND HE

MAY SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE BEHIND BARS. WHO IS HE? JIMMY LI’S BELIEF IN FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY, THE POWER OF THE EVERY MAN IS ROOTED IN HIS OWN STORY. WHEN HE WAS 12, HE SMUGGLE HIMSELF FROM MAINLAND CHINA TO HONG KONG IN A FISHING BOAT.

>> AN I WAS PUT IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FISHING BOAT TO GET AWAY WITH 80, MAYBE 100, I DON’T REMEMBER, AND HI WENT FROM THAT FISHING BOAT TO THE FLOOR OF THE HONG KONG SWEAT SHOP AND WORKED, SAVED AND STARTED HIS OWN CLOTHING COMPANY.

BY HIS EARLY 30s, HE HAD BUILT A FASHION EMPIRE. >> YOU COULD WALK AROUND THE WHOLE CITY OF HONG KONG, AND THERE WOULD BE MULTIPLE ON THE STREET CORNERS AND HE DIDN’T JUST BUILD A HONG KONG COMPANY. HE BUILT A MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATION.

>> HE WAS QUICK TO POINT OUT THAT EVERYTHING HE BUILT, HE OWED TO HONG KONG. >> I CAME HERE WITH ONE THING AND I GOT EVERYTHING I HAVE BECAUSE OF THIS PACE. >> IMPORTANTLY, IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE IF HE HAD STAYED IN MAINLAND CHINA.

AND STOP TO THINK ABOUT HOW INSULTING AND PERHAPS DANGEROUS A POINT OF VIEW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN. >> AND TO DEFEND THE FREEDOM AND SPEECH AND FREEDOM TO PROTEST AND OVERALL WITH THAT ENVIRONMENT AND FREEDOM AND MADE HIM WHO HE IS.

>> AT THE TIME LI SAYS HE REALLY BELIEVED ALL OF CHINA COULD HAVE ACCESS TO THOSE SAME FREEDOMS. HE WAS EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE. NOT ALL THAT INTO POLITICS. >> THE MILITARY MOVING IN ARMORED VEHICLES AND SMASHED THROUGH BARRICADES AND ADVANCED RELENTLESSLY AND SAW WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MAINLAND.

AND OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED DEMOCRACIES AND TO SEE WHO TWO GENERATIONS. >> AND ULTIMATELY AND IN THE INFORMATION IN THE EARLY 90s AND SOLD HIS STAKE AND BUILT A MEDIA EMPIRE. APPLE DAILY STARTED AS A KIND OF BRASH TABLOID WITH EYE CATCHING HEADLINES AND CELEBRITY EXPOSE

AND WITH THE REBELLIOUS PRO DEMOCRACY AND A BURST OF HUE MAR AND THAT WAS BOTH PROVOCATIVE AND POIGNANT AND THAT IT POKED AND DREW BLOOD FROM A REGIME SO NOT USED TO AND SO NOT TO TOLERATE. >> AND MORE AND MORE CRITICAL OF

THE CHINESE PARTY AND UNDER THE PRO DEMOCRACY PROTEST. >> AND DAYS AFTER AND IT TRANSLATES TO ENGLISH SAYS STAND UP, DON’T BE A SLAVE. THAT IS A PLAY ON WORDS TO THE CHINESE NATIONAL ANTHEM. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY WITH THIS HEADLINE?

>> WE DON’T WANT TO BE SLAVES. >> LI ALSO TOOK HIS MESSAGE ABROADENED AN URGED OTHER COUNTRIES TO STAND UP TO CHINA. AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS V OF PROTESTORS AND LI TRAVELLED TO THE U.S. TO MEET A SERIES OF HIGH RANKING OFFICIALS AND

PRAISED DONALD TRUMP ON THE TOUGH ON CHINA STANCE AND WROTE IN THE “WALL STREET JOURNAL” THAT HE IS ARGUABLY THE MOST ABSOLUTE DICTATOR IN HUMAN HISTORY. >> I THINK THE FEAR THAT THEY HAD OF TRAVELING AROUND THE WORLD AND ACTUALLY PASSING

LEGISLATION THAT WOULD COUNTER AND PUSH IN HONG KONG AND THAT WAS VERY GOOD AND LI WOULD BECOME A FREQUENT TARGET OF CHINESE WHO TREATED HIM AS A PUPPET, A TRAITOR AND A LAP DOG. LI HAS BEEN ARRESTED FIVE SEPARATE TIMES FOR PARTICIPATING IN UNAUTHORIZED PROTESTS.

AND THE HOUSE WAS APPARENTLY FIRE BOMBED AND IS UNDER CONSTANT SURVEILLANCE AND ENTIRELY UNDETERD. >> YOU CAN ALMOST ALWAYS EXPECT IF THERE WAS A RALLY OR VIGIL OR LARGE SOMEWHERE IN 2019, THAT JIMMY WOULD BE SOMEWHERE WALKING AMONG THE CROWDS. AND A BRITISH CITIZEN AND A

BRITISH PASSPORT AND HE COULD HAVE LEFT. AND STAY AND FIGHT AND I DON’T THINK I HAVE EVER KNOWN A BILLIONAIRE MORE BELOVED BY ORDINARY CITIZENS. >> AND THE NATIONAL SECURITY LAW FOR HONG KONG TO CRACK DOWN ON ANY GOVERNMENT. >> FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE IN HONG

KONG, THIS IS CONSIDERED A PRETTY DARK DAY. >> IN 2020, CHINA PASSED A SWEEPING NEW LAW GIVING IT UNPRECEDENTED CONTROL OVER HONG KONG LAW, SURVEILLANCE AND PUNISHMENT FOR ANYONE SEEMING TO BE CHALLENGED THE AUTHORITY. JIMMY LI SINGLED OUT FOR WHAT IT SAW AS EXTREMISM.

AND THIS SUPPORT TO GO TO MORE EXTREME LANGUAGE. >> AND THAT THE LAW WAS WRITTEN SPECIFICALLY FOR SOMEONE LIKE JIMMY. AND LI KNEW THIS. AND EVEN AS HE SPOKE DIRECTLY TO CBC. >> EVERYTHING THERE IS A VIOLATION OF THE NEW SECURITY LAW. AND THAT DOESN’T WORRY YOU?

>> NO. >> IS THERE NOT A CHANCE THAT YOU COULD BE SPIRITED AWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO PRESIDENT OF CHINA? >> WHAT DID I DO? LET’S KEEP QUIET. >> ONE WEEK AFTER THIS INTERVIEW. AND FROM THE OFFICES AND LI WAS

ONE OF THE FIRST AND MOST HIGH-PROFILE PEOPLE CHARGED UNDER THE NEW LAW. OUT OF ALL PEOPLE IN THIS MOVEMENT, WHY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TARGETED? >> BECAUSE I’M THE MEDIA. >> AND WITH MY MONEY — >> AND I AM VERY VOCAL. >> THIS THINGS US TO TODAY.

>> THE LONG-AWAITED TRIAL JIMMY L CIRCUMSTANCES OPEN IN HONG KONG ON MONDAY. THE CHARGES ARE CONSIDERABLE AND TO TREAT IN THE U.S., U.K., AND ARE CALLING FOR LI RELEASE AND CALLING HIM A NOTORIOUS CHINA ELEMENT. LI PLEADED NOT GUILTY. AND ACCORDING TO HONG KONG’S

CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER, THIS NEW LAW SO FAR HAS A 100% CONVICTION RATE.

After waiting more than three years in a jail cell, Jimmy Lai stood trial for treason in a Hong Kong courtroom this week. If found guilty, the 76-year-old could spend the rest of his life in prison. But who is this media tycoon and pro-democracy activist? And why does the Chinese government want him behind bars?

  1. What is the point of supporting the right to protests? Protests don't lead to any change but allow bad events to spiral out of control into riots.

Protesting is not the great aspect of democracy. It's superficial and unproductive. It's actually more helpful for authoritarian governments to use so they can identify trouble makers and take them out in that type of environment. It's so easy for the government to plant agents into the protestors and get them to become violent. That's how they shut down the Occupy Wall Street Protests. Nothing in the protests lead to any real change in the US. Did the capitol hill riots do anything? No, nothing at all. The Chinese government seem to be more intelligent in how they run everything. What is the purpose trying to convince Canadian's they are the enemy? Are we trying to claim the way our government is structured is better? If we compare both societies. It's obvious the Chinese are having their lives improve while Canadian's live's are getting worse. Their governing is working for the benefit of their people while we in Canada are getting more censorship and higher cost of living.
