“Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cantaloupes: What You Need to Know

Recalled Brands and Products
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a warning against consuming three recalled brands of cantaloupe: Malichita, Save on Foods, and Urban Fare. This recall applies to whole cantaloupes, pre-cut chunks, fruit salads, and platters containing the fruit. If you have any of these products in your home, it’s crucial to dispose of them immediately to prevent the risk of illness.
Specific Cases and Distribution
In British Columbia, there have been eight confirmed cases of salmonella linked to Malichita cantaloupes, along with one confirmed case in Ontario. The affected Malichita cantaloupes were sold between October 11 and November 14, while the best before dates for Save on Foods and Urban Fare products are up to and including November 9. It’s important to note that some of the recalled products were distributed in all provinces, Yukon, and potentially other territories.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people infected with salmonella develop symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food. While most individuals recover within a week, there is a greater risk of severe illness requiring medical treatment or hospitalization for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
