Creating an Edmonton curling hot spot that rocks

The Shamrock Curling Club is a non for-profit that’s been running since 1956 it is a costly thing especially you know running a an ice surface um it is definitely a challenge this club was very close to shutting the doors can give a lot of credit to the previous general manager his name is

Chris McTavish he brought in these learn to curl leagues started to build that up and really started to kind of focus on the fun side of curling building community and and bringing people here together and and it just kind of took off from there and and we’re in a really

Really strong spot at this point now it was actually kind of like just shocking seeing more and more people come in almost every night and every day all the sheets are full there only like a few days where it’s only like four sheets are being used in the morning and then

It’s just like eight sheets every you know afternoon night it’s nice seeing this place alive hearing people talk having a good time really found our niche in a lot of the kind of fun league and introducing curling to kind of a newer generation of curlers younger folk

That’s kind of our kind of bread and butter right now that’s me uh that’s my best friend Colin chartier we uh made at a curling Camp he’s awesome and those are my two other um teammates I met them like 2 years ago and they’re awesome very nice people we got a really good

Mix of people that are curling so we’ve got a lot of like a few leagues that play in the mornings that are kind of senior leagues retired folk and then in our evenings we’ve got people from the ages of 18 to 60 that are all kind of

Curling together in all the leagues so quite a diverse age Gap and a pretty decent diversity in people honestly as well I love it I think more people should curl it’s just about kind of creating that kind of community atmosphere and just giving people a chance to try the sport of curling

The ice is now in at many rinks across the Edmonton area, including at the Shamrock Curling Club. But not that long ago, the club was on the brink of closing. Volunteers hurried hard to turn it around.
