Typhoon Koinu hits Taiwan with record-breaking winds, injuring hundreds

At least one person has died and more than 300 were left with injuries after Typhoon Koinu made landfall in Southeastern Taiwan on Thursday.

Though the category four tropical cyclone is forecasted to weaken as it heads towards China, it barraged Taiwan’s Hengchun in the early morning with record wind speeds of 252 km per hour, causing mass destruction on the streets, toppling down trees, structures, and signs.

Most cities and counties declared a day off work and school as a result. The island’s capital, Taipei, however, was not affected and continues to operate as normal.
