Greg Fergus elected as new House of Commons Speaker

98

We get started I would just like to thank several people first I’d like to start with the honorable members the dean of the house [Applause] 1984 so congratulations thank you [Applause] sir you don’t remember what uh in 1988 I came here as a parliamentary page and I had the pleasure of serving that gentleman water and to deliver messages on paper he was kind upright at the time and he still is today he still is even more so

To beat your record at least in this chair for more than five days we’ll start with this afternoon I’d also like to thank uh my honorable colleagues who stood to let their name stand to become Speaker of the House of Commons let us all give them a huge thank you

They are amazing Canadians they have served this house especially the speaker speakership team the two assistant speakers and the deputy speaker in particular have served this house very well and with great honor integrity and I hope to continue to count on your Sage advice and your support as we move

Forward for the rest of this Parliament I’m really looking forward to working collaboratively with all of you and thank you for the Applause I know that in politics the uh there are only two times and people are give you a strong Applause and they’re happy to see you the day you

Arrive and of course the day you leave the speaker to use the Old Hockey analogy there’s nothing more than a referee and if there’s one thing I know is that nobody pays good money to go see the referee they go to see the stars you the players on the ice

Sending orders and rules will be followed debate and passionate debate here in this as I said earlier in my speech to you all respect is a fundamental part of what we do here we need to make sure that we treat each other with respect that we show Canadians the example

Because it can be no dialogue unless there’s a mutual understanding of respect if there can be no ability to pursue the arguments to make your points be heard unless we all agree to extend to each other that sense of respect and decorum so I’m going to be working hard on this

And I need all of your help to make this happen because this is the place where hard debates will happen this is the place where we can have passionate debate passionate and respectful debate I pay again starting soon I will meet the table officers I will meet with the deputy speakers

In order to decide how we’re going to proceed in the coming months in order in order to make sure to really set the record straight we have to follow the rules of the House of Commons and when we follow them we will have a fruitful debate important

And it will give us the opportunity to proceed with mutual respect the greatest success thank you

  1. This just proves the NDP no longer exists as a party they're just a branch of the liberals. Hence why conservatives are blowing both parties out of the water every week in polling since the spring.

  2. Congratulations. I hope he is fair, and honest. and I hope his appointment was on merit and not just checking a box. Also when he was talking about respect he never looked at the liberal side of the isle at all. and only smiled at the conservatives while saying it. OMG I HOPE THIS ISNT ANOTHER LIBERAL VIRTUE SIGNAL

  3. Smotes of political opportunism from Trudeau – expected nothing less. Always looking for ways to make political points to distract from all his other screw-ups. And now we yet, again , have another Liberal in a `non-partisan' position… ? Well, at least it wasn't Elizabeth May!!

  4. Having to drag the new speaker from being a member to his new role is a very old tradition of Parliament. He may indeed regret the role as the last speaker found.

  5. TRUDEAU; " Hmm – whom should I choose? How about the parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau? Oh, thats me ! Tee hee! That sounds non-partisan… and one with ethics violations, just like me! And he is a diversity clincher! PER-FECT!"
