Addressing the House of Commons on Wednesday, NDP MP Randall Garrison said it was Canada’s responsibility to make sure that all kids feel “safe, loved and supported,” but that the “anti-trans demonstrations” that were taking place across the country were making it “impossible.”

Minister of Women and Gender Equality Marci Ien followed by showing her support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community, addressing a message to kids saying that “We’re here with you. We hear you.”

Thousands of people gathered in cities across Canada for protests and counter-protests, screaming and chanting at each other about school policies on gender identity.

Separated by lines of police officers, the protests and counter-protests are linked to school policies, including in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan, that now require young people to get parental consent before teachers can use their preferred first names and pronouns.
