As a driver when you see the flash of a photo radar camera overhead you know a ticket is headed your way but it’s a different story for city bus drivers and other operators in the city fleet up until a couple years ago the city required that drivers pay their own

Fines but all that changed in 2021 when the Transit Union argued that making drivers pay their own tickets violated the Collective Agreement and amounted to double discipline since drivers already faced discipline for traffic violations and in a split decision the Alberta Labor Relations Board agreed so now tickets issued to city drivers on

The job are paid out of city coffers it’s something city Administration has been fighting unsuccessfully for years the city’s latest bid for an appeal was rejected by the Alberta Court of Appeal in August and the Transit Union hopes this time the decision will stick frankly um our members would far further just

Pay the ticket and be done with it and modify their own behavior but it’s the city’s Choice um it can it can require the operator to pay the ticket or if you’re discipline but they can’t do both the city says they’ve paid more than 49 thousand dollars in tickets issued to Fleet

  1. On top of the legal argument made by the union, the decision of whether you can safely stop before an intersection changes when you're carrying a few dozen people without seat belts, many of whom are standing and/or not paying attention.
