Flair Airlines is launching a unique pilot training program that promises to put applicants in the cockpit of one of their Boeing 737 jets within 18 months. 
The budget carrier, based in Edmonton, aims to revolutionize the process for new pilots in Canada to secure jobs flying large commercial jets. Flair’s program will follow a similar approach to those in Europe, which directly train entry-level pilots for first officer positions on Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 jets.

This approach differs from the traditional Canadian model, where pilots usually spend several years flying small planes and regional routes before major airlines consider hiring them to fly large jets.
Amid a longstanding pilot shortage, Canada’s aviation industry faces staffing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact, an aging workforce, and the proliferation of new discount airlines competing for labor supply.
As of the beginning of 2023, the number of commercial pilot licenses issued in Canada has declined by over 80% since 2019. Student pilots who have completed the training requirements for their private or commercial licenses have also experienced significant delays at Transport Canada in the past year.
Entering the pilot profession has become increasingly challenging, with costs exceeding $100,000. This financial burden deters some young individuals from pursuing a career in aviation.
